Safe Routes 2 School

Today, more than ever, there is a need to provide options that allow children to walk and bicycle to school safely. Safe Routes to School (SR2S) programs are part of the solution to increase physical activity and improve unsafe walking and bicycling conditions in our community. Each school provides a unique opportunity to create an environment that encourages walking and bicycling as a way for students, parents, and staff to travel safely to and from school.
The SR2S concept began in the 1970s in Denmark over a concern for the safety of children walking and bicycling to school. Since then, the program has spread to almost every country in the world.
In 2005, federal transportation legislation devoted $612 million for the National Safe Routes to School Program. And just this year, Durango Public Schools received $35,000 to implement SR2S. That money will be used over the next two years to educate and train students, parents, staff, and the community.

The first national event is coming up in October, so please spread the word.
